South girls go South: Camarines Sur – Legaspi – Caramoan

A 12-18 hour ride will eventually make you re-think your choices and love planes. I could be half way across the world already if I took a plane for the same amount of time but since it’s Bicol and the gang is complete again, that 12 hour ride and pain the in ass and neck was worth it.

For 5 days, we explored the Bicol province from the adventurous watersports complex in Camarines Sur, Mt. Mayon in Legaspi to seeing glorious Caramoan.

Camarines Sur – CWC

You need to go to Camarines Sur Watersports Complex! They have a beginner and advanced facilities for wake boarding. They have proper gear and the waters are clear here!

Rental is P160 (April 2017) and there is a deposit of 500. You get the 500 after you return your gear.

Legaspi – Visit Mt. Mayon

We have been dying to do this since January because we saw pictures of Zac Efron ATV-ing here. We want to do it too! Yes, we want to motorbike through an obstacle filled trail while going up and around an active volcano. I don’t have a driver’s license and have never done this before. No big deal, right?

ATV Tour: Green Lava Trail at Bicol Adventure costs PHP 950/person and will last for 2-3 hours. There is also an environmental fee of P50 pesos. The trail is mostly terrain and waters. Compared to the Black Lava Trail that is mostly residential.

Best to do the tour early morning. We went to the site at 6AM. When we got at the end of the trail, we had the place to ourselves. By the time we were leaving 2-4 groups were going up. We were already done and enjoyed the place. FUN!

Where we stayed: Mayon Backpackers Hostel

Caramoan – Beach, please!

Processed with VSCO with f2 preset

I’ve been to Boracay,Palawan, Zambales and Marinduque and have seen the beautiful beaches and Caramoan has a lot to offer. Down side, it’s 4-6 hours from Legaspi.

But if you stay in Al del Rio Villa Resort, you’re definitely in for a treat.

For P2,600 per person (we were a group of 10 people), we got to stay for 3 days and 2 night, tours and food included. Now tell me if that is not a freaking steal.

Al Del Rio is definitely the place to stay. It’s a home away from home. And the people behind the place are the most friendly and hospitable I have ever met. Kudos to the Constantino Family. Thank you for making our stay the best. Thank you for the warmth, friendship and the wonderful food.

When in Bicol, eat spicy food!

IMG_3494

Bicol folks love their food hot and spicy. This province has lots of spicy and gatadishes that will surely make you say, “ I gata have more!” while reaching for cold glass of water.

Bicolano Pizza and Sili Pili Shake

Italian dish with a Filipino rendition and Bicol’s character. Pizza has Laing ang bagoong, hazzaaa.

Milkshake has crushed pili, chili and vanilla ice cream. Weird combo but totally works! Definitely, a must try!

Sili Ice Cream

IMG_3492

Yes, even the ice cream is made from chili pepper! Don’t let is cute pink exterior fool you, it’s sweet and nice on the first taste then the spicyness kick in before you become too happy. Like a bad tinder date, right? But still had sex, I mean ice cream.

Ice cream comes in 4 levels. Level 1-3 and Volcano.

First Colonial Restaurant also has Pili, Cacao, Calamansi, Malunggay and even Pipino! This restaurant has the best Filipino Ice cream selection!

Bicol Express

Straight from the source! This dish is available everywhere in Manila because it’s that good of a dish but we’re here in Bicol to taste the real thing!

Laing

A Bicolana thought me how to eat laing and several other vegetables. Love you mama KM!

Everything has sili / chili you guys, get over it. This is fantastic!

Recommended Restaurants:

  • First Colonial Restaurant, several branches in Legaspi
  • Biggs Diner, branches in Naga and Legaspi

Going to Bicol is definitely not for everyone, the travel time is quite long. If you’re going to bring kids, I suggest staying in Naga and Legaspi. Caramoan activities are not for kids.

Be patient while on the road too. We’re not kidding about the 10-18 hour drive. Better have 2 people assigned as drivers. Have a clear itinerary that is also friendly to quick changes, traffic can change your plans.
